Need help now? SAMHSA’s National Helpline is free, confidential and open 24/7 in English and Spanish: 1-800-662-4357. In a mental health crisis, call or text 988. In an emergency, call 911.
Withdrawal Timelines publishes general health information about what withdrawal from caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, drugs and medications can be like. It is not medical advice, and it is not a substitute for care from a doctor, pharmacist or other qualified health professional who knows your situation.
Please read this before using the site
- Every person is different. Real timelines depend on how much you used, for how long, your health, other substances and medications, and whether you stop suddenly or taper.
- Do not stop or change a prescription medication without talking to the person who prescribes it. Some medications must be reduced slowly.
- Withdrawal from alcohol, benzodiazepines (such as Xanax, Klonopin, Ativan and Valium) and barbiturates can cause seizures and can be life-threatening. If you drink heavily every day or take these medicines regularly, get medical help before you stop. See Dangerous Withdrawals.
- If you have a seizure, confusion, hallucinations, chest pain, trouble breathing, or thoughts of harming yourself, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. In a mental health crisis, call or text 988.
- Our articles are researched from cited sources, but medical knowledge changes and we can make mistakes. Check the sources at the end of each article and the last-reviewed date (an editorial check, not a medical review). Articles are AI-assisted and not yet medically reviewed.
- Our withdrawal calculator and the date pickers on articles show the typical ranges described by an article’s sources, placed on the date you enter. They are not a prediction, a diagnosis or a safety check. Being past a phase or a date on a chart does not mean symptoms or risks are over, and showing several substances side by side does not assess how they interact or whether it is safe to stop them together.
- Using this site does not create a doctor-patient or any other professional relationship. We can’t answer personal medical questions.
