⚠ Medical warning

Don’t stop or change a prescribed stimulant without talking to your prescriber, especially if you take a high dose or have depression. Withdrawal can bring on a crash in mood. If you have thoughts of suicide, call or text 988 now.

Quick answer

Concerta is extended-release methylphenidate, with a half-life of about 3.5 hours but a long-lasting tablet. Its FDA label lists withdrawal after stopping suddenly or cutting the dose following prolonged use: low mood, depression, fatigue, vivid unpleasant dreams, insomnia or oversleeping, increased appetite and slowed movement or agitation. The NHS says a doctor will usually reduce the dose gradually.

Symptoms, phase by phase

The FDA label for Concerta, like those for Adderall and Vyvanse, says withdrawal after stopping suddenly or cutting the dose, following prolonged use of CNS stimulants, includes dysphoric (low, unhappy) mood; depression; fatigue; vivid, unpleasant dreams; insomnia or sleeping too much; increased appetite; and slowed movement or agitation. The labels don’t give a day-by-day timeline. Research timing data mostly comes from people using amphetamines heavily, like a 2005 methamphetamine study, so treat the timing below as a rough guide rather than a rule for prescription use.

Crash: First 1 to 3 days after stopping or a big dose cut (timing varies)

  • Tiredness, sleeping a lot
  • Low or dysphoric mood
  • Increased appetite
  • Slowed thinking or movement

Acute withdrawal: Roughly the first 7 to 10 days

  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Vivid, unpleasant dreams
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Agitation or restlessness

Subacute: Following weeks

  • Lower-level mood and energy changes
  • Return of ADHD symptoms (not withdrawal, but common when stopping)

What makes withdrawal longer or shorter

  • Dose and duration. The label describes withdrawal after abrupt stopping or dose reduction following prolonged use.
  • Misuse. Taking more than prescribed raises the risk of dependence; the NHS says physical dependence makes withdrawal more likely if you stop suddenly.
  • Depression history. Watch mood closely.

When to see a doctor or get help now

  • Before stopping or changing your dose.
  • Call or text 988 for thoughts of suicide.

Tapering

The NHS says your doctor will usually help you reduce gradually. Concerta tablets shouldn’t be cut or crushed. We don’t publish dose-by-dose schedules. Your prescriber should set your plan, and adjust it if symptoms appear.

Tips for getting through it

  • Plan lighter days at first
  • Keep regular sleep and meals

Frequently asked questions

Is Concerta withdrawal different from Ritalin withdrawal?

It’s the same drug in a long-acting tablet, so symptoms are similar.

How long does Concerta withdrawal last?

The label doesn’t say, so we use the amphetamine research pattern above as a rough guide.

Can I skip weekends?

Ask your prescriber before changing how you take it.
