Quick answer
Quitting vapes and quitting cigarettes cause the same nicotine withdrawal. Symptoms usually start within 1 to 2 days, are strongest in the first week, and most fade within 2 to 4 weeks. Cravings can pop up for longer, often around triggers. Research on withdrawal from vaping specifically is still limited, so vape timelines are based on nicotine withdrawal in general. Withdrawal is uncomfortable but not dangerous, and free help works: call 1-800-QUIT-NOW or text QUIT to 47848.

Is quitting vaping easier or harder?
There is no good evidence yet that one is easier. The withdrawal itself comes from nicotine, so the symptoms and timing are the same. What can differ is the habit around it: vapes can be used almost anywhere and all day, without the natural break of finishing a cigarette, which some people find makes it harder to notice how often they use them. Others find that the routines and places linked to smoking are the hardest triggers to shake.
If you both smoke and vape, you are still dealing with one nicotine withdrawal, not two, but you may have more triggers to plan for.

FAQ
Do vapes cause worse withdrawal than cigarettes?
We did not find good evidence either way. Some vapes deliver a lot of nicotine, and heavy, all-day use may mean stronger cravings at first, but the symptoms and timeline are the same nicotine withdrawal.
Does switching from cigarettes to vaping avoid withdrawal?
Switching keeps you on nicotine, so you will usually not get full withdrawal while you vape. You may get withdrawal later when you stop vaping. A quitline coach can help you plan either step.
