Quick answer
Quitting Zyn or other nicotine pouches causes nicotine withdrawal. Based on research on nicotine withdrawal in general, it usually starts within 1 to 2 days, is strongest in the first week, and fades over 2 to 4 weeks. Research on withdrawal from pouches specifically is limited.

Symptoms, phase by phase
Nicotine is the same drug whether it comes from a cigarette, a vape or a pouch, so the symptoms are the same: cravings, anger or irritability, anxiety, low mood, difficulty concentrating, impatience, trouble sleeping, restlessness (Hughes, 2007), plus cravings and increased hunger (Smokefree.gov). On January 16, 2025, the FDA authorized the marketing of 20 ZYN products. The FDA stressed that this doesn’t mean the products are safe or “FDA approved”, and that youth shouldn’t use tobacco products and adults who don’t use them shouldn’t start.
Onset: Within 1 to 2 days
- Cravings for a pouch
- Irritability and impatience
- Restlessness
- Trouble concentrating
Peak: The first week
- Strongest cravings
- Anxiety or low mood
- Trouble sleeping
- More hunger
Easing: Weeks 2 to 4
- Most symptoms fade
- Cravings come less often
Lingering: After the first month
- Cravings around old routines (work, driving, after meals)

What makes withdrawal longer or shorter
- Pouch strength and how many you use. Higher-strength pouches and using them all day mean more nicotine to adjust to.
- Habit cues. Pouches are easy to use anywhere, so the habit is often tied to many parts of the day.
- Quit support. Nicotine replacement and coaching can make it easier.
When to see a doctor or get help now
- You’re having thoughts of self-harm (call or text 988) or your mood keeps getting worse.
- You want help with nicotine replacement or quit medicines.

Tapering
Cutting down before you quit can help: use fewer pouches a day, step down to a lower strength, or stretch the time between pouches. Nicotine gum or lozenges are another way to step down. Free coaching: 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
Tips for getting through it
- Step down strength or number of pouches before your quit date
- Replace the mouth habit with sugar-free gum or mints
- Note your trigger times and plan for them
- Ride out cravings: distract yourself and avoid triggers for a while, as Smokefree.gov suggests
- Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free coaching
Frequently asked questions
How long does Zyn withdrawal last?
Research on pouches specifically is limited, but nicotine withdrawal generally peaks in the first week and fades over 2 to 4 weeks. Cravings can last longer.

No. The FDA authorized the marketing of certain ZYN products in January 2025, but said that is not the same as calling them safe or FDA approved.
